Abstract Desktop Background Tutorial for GIMP

Have you ever wanted to know how to make a bright, colourful, creative abstract background for your desktop in GIMP?  Well, in this tutorial, I'll give you the steps I would use to make a simple abstract background with GIMP.

programs/tools

  • GIMP

step 1

Start out by, of course, opening GIMP.  Once it has opened, go to File >> New and and insert 1024px for the width, and 768px for the height (or whatever size your computer screen is).  Click OK and a new image will open.  Just to be on the safe side, go to File >> Save As and save it as a XCF file.

step 2

Select the Paintbrush Tool.  Begin by making a few wavy lines on the background.  The lines don't have to be perfect.  Make as many lines as you want, just be sure to leave enough room to fill in some colours.  Save your progress.

step 3

Create a new transparent layer and name it texture.  Click on the Bucket Fill Tool and change the colour to #3f3f3f.  Go to Filters >> Artistic >> Clothify and change the settings as follows:

  • Blur X: 3
  • Blur Y: 3
  • Azimuth: 135.0
  • Elevation: 45.0
  • Depth:3
Click OK.  Adjust the opacity of the layer to 20%Save your progress.

step 4

Switch back to the Background Layer and begin filling in the white spaces created with different colours.  Include some bright colours, dark colours, neon colours, neutral colours, earth colours, warm colours, etc.,  Try not to make any two colours the same.  Save your progress as you go along.

step 5

Last step!!  Go to File >> Save As and save your image as a PNG file.  And you're done!!
